Pfizer Analytical Research Centre
to open at Ghent University, Belgium

Ghent University, Belgium, today announced the establishment of a new research centre driving for innovation and productivity in Pharmaceutical Analytical Sciences. The centre is the result of a collaboration between Pfizer, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, and Ghent University.

The collaboration creates a centre of excellence for the development of novel pharmaceutical analytical methods by combining the expertise of the research group Separation Sciences at the Department of Organic Chemistry, Ghent University with that of Pfizer. The unit, which has been named the Pfizer Analytical Research Centre (PARC), will be based at Ghent University.

PARC is a multidisciplinary collaboration which aims to generate high-throughput analytical systems for pharmaceutical analysis and drug discovery, to introduce novel approaches to pharmaceutical analysis such as green chromatography, and to advance innovative ideas and concepts for analytical work in the 21st century.

Commenting on the collaboration Professor Pat Sandra, the Centre's Director, said:

" The establishment of PARC recognizes the importance of Analytical Chemistry in discovering and developing the innovative new medicines the world wants and needs. Pfizer's support of this project is extremely welcome. It provides an exciting opportunity for the analytical community to perform world-class research in Pharmaceutical Analytical Science. The collaboration, and the direct link it provides between experts in academia and industry, will encourage innovative work in this field. "

Under the terms of the three-year agreement, Pfizer will support a number of post-doctoral staff who will work together with Ph.D. and undergraduate students on jointly agreed research projects.
